Learn more about Cardiff's Fairytale castle.
When you think of fairy tales, you envision castles, knights, and magical tales. Castell Coch, or the 'Red Castle', truly embodies this imagination. With its dramatic turrets and round towers, nestled within lush woods, it's a picturesque symbol of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture, straight from a storybook.
Castell Coch stands on ancient foundations, believed to date back to a 13th-century fortress. The castle we see today, however, is the brainchild of the 3rd Marquess of Bute and architect William Burges. Constructed in the late 19th century, it was built as a rural retreat, embodying a romantic interpretation of the Middle Ages.
Despite its medieval appearance, Castell Coch is surprisingly modern for its time, equipped with central heating and other amenities. The interior showcases opulent Victorian decorations and furniture, reflecting the Marquess's immense wealth. And its enchanting woodland setting has made it a beloved filming location for TV series and films.
Perched above the village of Tongwynlais, north of Cardiff, Castell Coch boasts a stunning position overlooking the River Taff. Its postcode is CF15 7JS. Its forested surroundings make it a beautiful, tranquil escape from the city.
Explore the castle's sumptuous rooms, including the ornate banqueting hall, and Lady Bute's bedroom with its exotic murals. Wander through the woodlands, where you'll find trails suitable for walking, cycling, and horse riding. For younger visitors, there's a delightful woodland-themed play area.
If you're travelling from Cardiff city centre, Castell Coch is an easy 15-minute drive north, taking the A470 and exiting at Taff's Well. Alternatively, buses 26 and 132 from Cardiff Central Bus Station will take you to Tongwynlais, from where it's a short walk to the castle.
Before heading to Castell Coch, visit the castle's official website for updates on opening times and events. There's a small admission fee, but entry is free for members of Cadw, the Welsh heritage organisation. Don't forget your camera, and dress for the weather.
After exploring Castell Coch, why not visit the nearby Fforest Fawr Geopark for a dose of geology and nature? If you're up for a longer trip, head back into Cardiff city centre to visit Cardiff Castle or the National Museum Cardiff.
