Book Storage Ideas

Are your books taking up too much room?

Book lovers will know the struggle - the constant quest to find the next gripping novel, the joy of turning crisp new pages, and the inevitable challenge of book storage. If your collection of literary treasures is growing but your living space isn't, you're in the right place. Let's explore some smart, stylish, and even unexpected book storage ideas to showcase your love for literature.

Book Storage for your home

Proper book storage is more than just piling books on a shelf. It's a fine balance between preservation, accessibility, and aesthetics. You want to keep your books in good condition, have your favourite titles within arm's reach, and let your collection add character to your space.

Most of us don't have enough room for a library so here are some book storage ideas you can use in your home to keep your home decluttered and your books safe, starting with the standard bookshelf.

Built-in Bookshelves

If you're fortunate enough to have built-in bookshelves in your home, make the most of them. Not only can they hold a sizeable book collection, but they also add a certain charm and character to a room.

While built-in bookshelves are an excellent solution, you may not have the space or budget for a built-in bookshelf, the next best option is a freestanding bookcase.

Free-Standing Bookcases

Free-standing bookcases are versatile and come in an array of styles and sizes. Go for a tall, narrow bookcase if you're short on floor space, or opt for a low, wide one if you have a large wall to fill.

You can pick up a cheap bookcase from Ikea, or even second-hand on Facebook marketplace.  While bookcases take up room they can often store many books, but if you don't have the room you can try using shelving.

Corner Shelves

Don't overlook those cosy corners. A corner bookshelf can transform an unused corner into a cosy reading nook.  A corner shelf is cheap to install and can add more character to your room too.

While we have covered the most traditional ways of storing books above, sometimes traditional is a little boring and if traditional bookcases aren't your thing or you're up for a little adventure, there are unconventional book storage ideas you may want to try such as converting your stairs into a bookcase.

Staircase Storage

The space beneath staircases often goes unused, but it can be the perfect spot for book storage. Consider built-in shelves or pull-out drawers for a neat and tidy look.  While staircase storage is a little expensive, it will provide you with more than enough storage to keep your books safe.

If there isn't a budget for that, you may want to try something like a floating shelf for your book storage.

Floating Shelves

Floating shelves offer a minimalist, modern vibe and can be arranged in a variety of ways. They also free up floor space, making them an excellent book storage idea for small rooms.  Once again you can pick up floating shelves for cheap in places like Ikea.

While a floating shelf offers a great way of providing storage in your home, you may want to hide your books out of sight.

If you prefer to keep your books out of sight, these hidden storage ideas will do the trick.

Under-Bed Storage

The space under your bed can be used to store books. Opt for under-bed storage boxes, or if you're feeling ambitious, consider a DIY project to create a pull-out bookshelf.

Under-bed storage can be achieved fairly cheaply and see-through boxes can be picked up for a few pounds.  You can also use furniture with inbuilt storage to help

Ottoman Storage

A storage ottoman is a clever and stylish solution. It can be used as a seat, footrest, coffee table, and, of course, hidden book storage as well as many other types of storage.

You can also get seating with built-in storage too. Being smart with your storage can help to keep the clutter down in your home and provide more space for your family to enjoy their living space.

Self storage units

If you have tried all of the above and still don't have room for the books in your home and you don't want to get rid of them, then consider hiring a self storage unit.

Self storage units come in a variety of sizes and can be an affordable solution for storing your books.  At Pink Storage, we have many storage options available and we serve many locations in the UK, including Cardiff, Swansea, Barry, Newport, Manchester and many more.
