Tips for storing your furniture long term.

Storing furniture for a long period can be a challenging task, especially if you want to ensure that it remains safe and in good condition.

Furniture is often expensive, and it is essential to take the necessary precautions to protect it from damage during storage.

If you have no room left in your home and you're considering storing furniture for the long term in a self-storage unit then keep on reading.

Clean your furniture before putting it into long-term storage

Before you put your furniture in storage, it is essential to clean it thoroughly. Dust and dirt can cause damage over time, and it is best to remove them before you store your furniture in a storage unit. To clean your furniture use a soft cloth or vacuum to remove any surface dirt and then use a damp cloth to clean it.

Once your furniture is clean you will need to let it dry before putting it into storage, failure to do this will could result in mould growing and damaging your items.

Take your furniture apart to make moving easier

If possible, disassemble your furniture before you store it. This will help to save space and prevent any damage that may occur during transportation to the storage unit. Make sure that you keep all the screws and bolts in a labelled bag so that you can reassemble the furniture easily when you need it.

If you can't take the furniture apart make sure that you take the time to cover it up to protect it. Covering your furniture with a protective covering is one of the best ways to protect it from damage during storage.

When choosing a covering use a breathable material, such as canvas or cotton, to prevent moisture buildup and mould growth. Avoid using plastic covers as they can trap moisture and cause damage to your furniture. Furniture pads are also a good choice for an added level of protection to minimise the chances of scratches and dents.

How to store your furniture

The position in which you store your furniture is very important so that you avoid damage. You should always store your furniture upright unless specified. Storing your furniture upright will prevent structural damage. There are some exceptions to this rule, if you have furniture that is prone to warping such as a dressing table then you should store it on its back.

You also need to take into consideration the item that you are storing. Some items can be more prone to damage when the temperature and humidity change with the seasons. If you are storing items that could be damaged by heat and humidity then you should make sure you hire a storage unit that is temperature controlled.

Even if you do have a temperature-controlled unit, we would advise that you keep the furniture within your self-storage unit off the floor. There are a few ways you can do this. One of the easiest is to create an elevated platform by laying down some wooden pallets first. We don't recommend you store your goods in a damp storage container.

Finally, check on your furniture as much as you can. Even with all of the above in place you still may get mould growing on your items. It's much easier to rectify a small problem quickly rather than letting it ruin your prized possessions.
